What is Medical Payments Coverage on my Auto Insurance?

What is Medical Payments Coverage on my Auto Insurance?

Auto insurance policies are very complicated because they contain so many different types of coverages. Most people think they have full coverage but there is no such thing as full coverage.  One item that is not required but is very important to have on your auto insurance policy is medical payments coverage. Also know as med pay, this type of insurance coverage will pay for medical expenses after an auto accident regardless of who is at fault for the accident. You can choose how much coverage you have but it is recommended to get at least $5,000.00 in medical payments coverage.

I have health insurance, why do I need med pay?

Even if you have health insurance, med pay can still be very helpful.  For example, if you have to go to the emergency room after an auto accident, you may have a very expensive co-pay with your health insurance.  Medical payments coverage will cover expenses such as co-pays.  Additionally, if you want to see a chiropractor or a medical professional not covered by your health insurance you can use your medical payments coverage for these medical bills.
