Call Us NowInsurance Requirements for Uber and Lyft Drivers In California
California requires all drivers to carry auto liability insurance to cover accidents they cause. The minimum insurance coverage is higher for drivers working for hire through apps like Uber or Lyft than for other drivers.
According to the California Public Utilities Commission, transportation network company (TNC) drivers must have the following:
When Not Logged Into a Ridesharing App
The TNC driver’s personal insurance applies. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), regular drivers must have at least:
- $30,000/$60,000 in bodily injury liability per person/accident
- $15,000 in property damage liability
When Logged Into Uber or Lyft and Awaiting a Ride Request
The TNC must carry:
- $50,000/$100,000 in bodily injury liability per person/accident
- $30,000 in property damage liability
The TNC, the driver, or a combination of both must also carry total liability insurance coverage in the amount of at least $200,000.
When a Ride Is Accepted and En Route to Pick Up Passengers
The TNC must carry $1 million in commercial auto insurance.
When Transporting Passengers
The TNC $1 million commercial auto insurance policy still applies, but they must now also have a $1 million uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) policy.
Uber insurance and Lyft insurance provide TNC drivers with coverage in the above amounts. Our Temecula rideshare accident lawyers can help you seek compensation through these policies. We can also help you file claims against at-fault drivers of other vehicles involved in the crash.

If you’ve been injured or a loved one has been killed through an act of negligence, you need the highest level of legal representation.
Schedule a Free ConsultationHow Long Do You Have to Seek Rideshare Accident Damages?
You should file Uber and Lyft insurance claims immediately following your accident, as well as liability claims against any other negligent parties. In fact, the app allows you to file a claim.
It can be difficult to sue a rideshare company for a TNC driver’s actions since Uber and Lyft view their drivers as independent contractors, not employees. However, if legal action is an option in your case, you have two years to file a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit with the Riverside County Courthouse, according to CCP § 335.1.
